Tin plating is used as a coating because of its good corrosion resistance and solderability, as well as its low transfer resistance. In addition, tin plating gives a shiny and smooth decorative surface.
Copper plating and semi-polished nickel plating are used underneath the tin plating to improve adhesion and offers corrosion protection.
The pieces are treated in an electrolytic process. Tin plating can be done on brass, steel, copper and aluminium. The treatment is done by rack or barrel plating methods in automated lines. The thickness of the coating can be measured with an X-ray machine.
